Today, Monsieur Wanie was at a workshop at Oakwood on Restorative Justice/Practice. It was pretty interesting... and on the lunch break it was cool to see many ex-Winona students!
Meanwhile "back at the ranch", Mlle Boem took Monsieur Wanie's classes. 86 and 87 had a period each to work on "Geo. ch12" and "Hist. ch6", then the new French folders, and finally their skyscrapers. And the classroom seemed to have been cleaned-up so that was cool too.

La neige et le vent, a quand le printemps?!
Today students handed-in their "Geographie, chapitre 11". Monsieur Wanie broke some records, got them all corrected and handed-back in the same day. Most students did really well, others need to dig deeper to do more research and put more of themselves into their work.
Then, students worked on their "Histoire, Chapitre 5" due on Monday as well as their skyscrapers. Students also assembled their latest French folder.
Students, here's a cool link to a scale model of Toronto... all the models are made by a 15 year-old! http://www.blogto.com/city/2011/02/toronto_in_cardboard_looks_pretty_damn_good/

Mince, encore de la neige!
This morning, 87 had their double period to create a mess in Monsieur Wanie's classroom. There are some really neat structures in the works! Hopefully this whole project will come together and look cool for the 4th of March!
Later in the day 86 and 87 had some more time to work on their "Histoire" and "Geographie" chapters.
Next week, classes finally come back to the French "A l'aeroport" and "A bord de l'avion" chapters. There will also be some internet-based French grammar exercises to do online and print out so students should be ready for that!

Mercredi, le soleil et le beau temps suppose!
Today, class 86 used their double period to work on their skyscrapers. Most groups are doing alright but there are a few who have not made quite enough progress! Maybe some groups should come in early to get some extra time to work.
In the afternoon, both classes worked on their "Geographie" and "Histoire" due on Friday and Monday respectively. As well, Monsieur Wanie handed-back a huge pile of corrected assignments. Most were very well done, there are many students who must be working overtime on making their units complete and original! Good job kids!

Mardi, le soleil brille mais il fait froid!
Everyone's back from the long weekend!
It was great for Monsieur Wanie to meet parents last Thursday evening and Friday morning. Thanks for coming in!
Students, there are many assignments to keep track of in the next little bit. There are only three weeks until Spring Break! This week, students will be spending most of their time working on "Geographie" and "Histoire". Only a few periods will be spent on the skyscrapers, students will be back at them next week!
Oh, and hey! We got a postcard from Aparna! Cool huh? Thanks Aparna! Good to hear you're doing alright! Tell your family that Monsieur Wanie says hi!

Jeudi, la pluie et le verglas et ensuite le gris!
Yet another day of work on the skyscraper project! The buildings are really taking shape! Monsieur Wanie is looking forward to students finishing up so the class doen't look like a hurricane hit it!
This evening, Monsieur Wanie is conducting parent-teacher interviews. Tomorrow morning as well. For students it's a four day weekend, what with family day on Monday. Be safe out there!

Mercredi, le calme de la mi-semaine.
Today, Monsieur Wanie had a meeting first thing and so only made it to class near the end of first period. Students were busily working on their skyscrapers as they would be all week.
As per yesterday's discussion with the class, Monsieur Wanie spoke with Mr. Ehrlich, Mr. DaLuz, Ms. Sher and Ms. Vandenberg regarding time to change after pool. The final result is that there really is no extra time in the timetable to allow for extra time to change. Further to that, there really is no provision in the pool program to allow for free-time. The allowance for free-time is too random to allow for a blanket rule allowing students extra time to change instead of free pool time. As it stands, students have 15 minutes in which to change. 10 minutes is allowed for by the pool staff and another 5 minutes is built into the timetable. Students, to clarify: you need to be in class and on-time after pool. Do not waste your time in the change rooms or in the halls between classes.

Mardi, le soleil et le gele!
NB Please re-read yesterday's (Monday's) post, Monsieur Wanie has edited it! As well, regarding pool and time in the change rooms... As per today's class discussion, Monsieur Wanie will speak to the "powers that be" in order to negotiate on students' behalf, the right to choose between free-time and extra time to change.
Today was another day of working on the skyscraper project. There are quite a few good designs coming along! Some groups worked very hard while others have yet to get started! Students, the due date is Friday the 4th of March!
As well, some classes went to watch the Variety Village Syncro Club do their thing in the pool. Pretty interesting stuff! Some talented athletes!
Oh, and today sudents received their report cards too! Everyone had a chance to write a comment or two to reflect on their best work and their goals for improvement. By tomorrow, hopefully parents will be able to log in and sign up for an interview slot on Thursday afternoon and evening or Friday morning!

Lundi, un peu gris. A quand l'ete?
Well, this week is a short week due to interview day on Friday. Students will be receiving their report cards tomorrow. Hopefully parents, who have any concerns or who just want to come in and say hi, will have an opportunity to sign up for a time slot online...
Today, students worked on their skyscrapers. This week will mainly be dedicated to that. But everyone should keep the "Geographie" and "Histoire" chapters in mind, they'll be due soon!
Monsieur Wanie dealt, perhaps poorly, with an issue regarding students' desire for more time in the showers after pool... It was very difficult for Monsieur Wanie to understand students' intentions regarding a petition they had made due to the way in which it was presented. Students, should you wish to effect change within the school, you should begin by starting a dialogue with your subject teacher, homeroom teacher, vice-principal or principal. Monsieur Wanie has frequently provided time in class to raise issues which are of concern to you! As well, individually, should you have an issue that you would like to discuss, do not be shy! Bring it to your homeroom teacher, vice-principal or principal. It is very important for you to learn to stand up for yourselves and your rights. Teachers are available to guide you towards the correct manner in which to do so. It is also important to understand that, should you affix your name to a petition, you are agreeing that what you have signed is something something that you would stand up for yourself. You should not use someone else to do what you yourself are unwilling to do.

Vendredi, j'en ai marre de l'hiver.
This morning, students in 86 and 87 had a period each to work on their skyscrapers. Students need to remember to bring their supplies to school for next week! It will be a big week of building, uh, buildings...
Later in the morning students had another period in which Monsieur Wanie explained the "Geographie, Chapitre 11" questions and got started on explaining the "Histoire, Chapitre 5" questions and chapter.
In the afternoon, students danced away the day!

Jeudi, le soleil et le froid de nouveau!
Today was the due date for "Histoire, Chapitre 4" so students in both classes handed them in. Yesterday students had to hand in their notebooks with their "Recit d'aventure" in it. And tomorrow the "Geographie, Chapitre 10" is due tomorrow. Lots of work to be completed in order to spend all of next week on the skyscraper project...
As well, "Geographie, Chapitre 11" and "Histoire, Chapitre 5" were assigned and are due 2 weeks from now...
"Geo, Chapitre 11"
Questions: 1,3,4,6.
a rendre vendredi le 25 fevrier
"Hist, Chapitre 5"
Questions: VTC 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 ATC: 6
a rendre lundi le 28 fevrier
Students, bring in all of your skyscraper building supplies!
At the end of the day Monsieur Ferron and Monsieur Wanie held an important Camp Arowhon meeting where rules were outlined and explained, bus partners were chosen and a form was sent home to be filled out and brought back signed as soon as possible. (Despite the April deadline indicated on the form!)

Mardi, le vert souffle et il fait froid!
Wow, a pretty chilly day out! And windy! At least the sun is out...
Anyway, classes had time today to work on their skyscraper designs, some students went to the library to use the computers for research.
Shea, here's a link for your group! (And everyone else) It's a huge collection of buildings listed alphabetically.

Lundi, gris.
Today, students worked at their "Recit d'aventure" assignment. Some students have quite a good start. Hopefully, Monsieur Wanie will enjoy reading them!
As well, Monsieur Wanie handed-back the "Histoire, Chapitre 1" units. Most students did really well. Others may not have done enough research or failed to read the chapter to add depth to their answers...
86 and 87 began a new art assignment, a group one this time. The goal is to make a detailed skyscraper in 1:87th scale. Some cool websites are listed below. Students, pay attention to scale, it's 1:87 (Called HO scale), not N scale which is 1:160. 1:87 means 87 feet in real life, equals a foot in HO scale. So for example, the tree outside the classroom window that is about 43 feet tall, would be 6 inches (1/2 foot) in model form...

Vendredi! Encore un peu gris.
Today, 86 and 87 started working on their "Recit d'aventure" assignment. Students are to write a short (2 page max) French story describing an adventure or experience that they have had... This term, classes will begin to focus more on grammar structures, verbs and verb tenses and vocabulary. Students are asked to refrain from using online translators for French grammar assignments.
As well, students in both classes had an elective period to work on projects due next week.

Mercredi! Les ecoles fermees!
Snow Day! Wow, unbelievable, we live in Canada, it's February, and it's snowing... Anyway, the TDSB closed Toronto schools for the day. That gives students in 86 and 87 a day to go out tobogganing, drink hot chocolate and finish up the "Histoire" that was originally due today!
Students, have fun out there and be safe!
Tuesday, February 1, 2011
Mardi, la neige arrive ce soir!
Today, students finished presenting their "Geographie, Chapitre 9" oral reports. It was a bit of a bumpy day in class given that a few students chose not to do their reports and receive a "0" instead!
Tomorrow, both 86 and 87 started on their book report assignment based on the French novels "L'avalanche" and "Aventure en foret". Hopefully students will be able to recount some interesting stories...
Hopefully students will brave what the news stations are billing as the coming of "snowpocalypse" to bring their "Histoire, Chapitre 1" that is due tomorrow!
