Vendredi, c'est presque le vacances!
So today is the last day of school before the winter break!
First thing: A HUGE big apology goes out to Natalie Bulzan who somehow got left off of the Principal's list! Natalie: Pick up your certificate in the New Year. It will be waiting for you on Monsieur Wanie's desk! Congatulations!
It was pretty much party central this morning! Some students worked on maps and French folders, others ate cake, drank pop and ate junk food in celebration or just because...
Monsieur Wanie is overwhelmed by the outpouring of gifts... A heartfelt thank-you to students and their parents and guardians! Monsieur Wanie can only express again how proud he is to be the teacher of these two classes!
Hopefully students will have a safe and fun holiday and come back rested and ready for the New Year!
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, may your celebrations and vacations be filled with Joy!

Jeudi, il fait un froid de canard!
This morning, students in 86 and 87 participated in the Honour Roll assembly... quite a few students in both classes were presented with certificates! Congratulations kids! Well done! Monsieur Wanie is proud of ALL his students!
Monsieur Wanie came around the class for a homework check, most students are making decent progress on the "Histoire" maps and the "Chapitre 3 et 4" French folders...
A reminder for after-the-holiday due dates:
-5 "Histoire" maps due Monday, 4th Jan.
-Bring a shoe box for the latest art assignment.
Today and tomorrow left until TWO WEEKS of XBox... er Xmas...

Mercredi, le soleil finalment!
So today, a big congrats to the students who were involved in yesterday's concert! It was a big success according to the reviews...
In the two morning periods, students worked on the assigned "Geo" maps. The due-date for them is Monday, January 4th.
In the afternoon, students worked on "Chapitres 3 et 4" of the French folder series...

Mardi gris encore...
Today students are busy everywhere getting ready for the winter concert this evening.
In the morning, the students that were not involved in rehearsals worked on the maps assigned yesterday.
In the afternoon, classes 86 and 87 were "off-timetable" and involved in the concert "run-through". Monsieur Wanie was happy to be assigned supervisory coverage in the gym so he could hear some of what's expected this evening!

Lundi gris, la pluie arrive...
This morning, Zac joined 86 as a new student, so a big welcome goes out to him!
Students also started "Histoire" today!
Every student picked up a textbook to take home, and take care of until June!
Students started work on a map of British North America in 1860... a few students even managed to start the next map, that of Canada in 1870... There are five maps in total for this assignment.

Vendredi, le vent souffle!
So today is a strange day, Monsieur Wanie is away, but most students are out on a Tour Band tour...
Anyway, Ms A. is doing the school rounds with 86 and 87. Hopefully everyone is proud of how the day went!
Due Monday:
Mapping question from "Geo, Chapitre 9".

Jeudi, le soleil, l'hiver.
This morning, students in 87 started on the keyword definitions for "Geographie, Chapitre 10". During the second period, students worked on the latest French folder.
In the afternoon, 86 had their homework checked and began the keyword definitions for "Geographie, Chapitre 10".
All in all, a pretty decent day with students working away!

Mercredi, tempete d'hiver!
Okay, first off... A huge big thank-you to 86 for the thoughtful hoodie! Like I have said before, teacher Christmas/holiday gifts are unnecessary... get good grades and graduate proud, that is the greatest gift Monsieur Wanie can ever wish for! Once again, thank you! Very thoughtful!
So after a snowy start to the day, students received the new French folder, Chapters 3 and 4 together and started work on it.
Monsieur Wanie checked 87's "Geographie" homework and students continued work on the folder from this morning.
Both 86 and 87 were assigned a mapping question for Monday. It involves downloading and tracing a map of the (GTA) Greater Toronto Area and coloring-in the agricultural and urban areas as well as bodies of water and waterways. Students had to label the major cities as well...

Mardi et le soleil brille!
This morning, students together with Monsieur Wanie, finished off the correcting of the French "A l'aeroport" folder and started on the taking-up of "Chapitre 2: A bord de l'avion".
Students continued their day with some "Geo" note-taking on "Chapitre 9, La structure des economies", to find out how and why a country's level of development and people's quality of life is linked with the different levels of industry...
Students started working on question 2 of "Geographie, Chapitre 9" due on Wednesday for87 and Thursday for 86. It asks students to write a short paragraph using or incorporating 6 terms given about economic structure and development.

Lundi gris et frais.
This morning Monsieur Wanie and students from 86 and 87 went over the first French folder "A bord de l'avion". Class was moving along well with students participating and sharing answers... until it was noticed that quite a few students STILL hadn't completed some of the questions! AAARGH! Students, finish your homework! There are no excuses to have not attended to assignments from four weeks ago!!!
In the afternoon, classes 86 and 87 had a discussion with Monsieur Wanie based on the one homework question assigned last Thursday about the three (and emerging fourth) levels of industry. Students wrote notes on the board and collectively discussed them afterwards.

Vendredi, les entrevues.
Monsieur Wanie wanted to write just a quick note to all parents and guardians who came by on Thursday evening and Friday morning...
It was great to meet and talk with all of you! It's clear why your kids are such good students! Caring parents and guardians = successful, intelligent, students with a positive attitude towards school! It's truly an honour to be their teacher!
Have a great weekend,
Monsieur Wanie

Jeudi, le gris et la pluie.
This morning, students continued working on the 3D assignment... most are near completion and are looking great, while a few are lacking the details that are necessary to get a good grade.
In the afternoon, students read and discussed the three levels of industry as described in "Geo, Chapitre 9". Many students participated! It was a positive end to the week!

Mercredi, il fait beau!
Today, students worked on their "Dans l'avion" French Folders and 3D dioramas.
Students' "Geo" chapters are still trickling in... many students had asked for extensions. Hopefully, they'll all be in before discussions start on "Chapitre 9" tomorrow!
Students: The 3D movie scene diorama is due on Monday!

Today 86 started on the art assignment that 87 began yesterday.
There are some great ideas out there! Work is progressing well!
In the afternoon, students had a chance to work on the "Dans l'avion" folder.

Lundi, le froid, le soleil, le vent!
Report card day! Yay!
Students in 87 started their new art assignment... for this project, students are engaged in building the diorama of a movie scene... Monsieur Ferron's class has already completed Monsieur Wanie's project, students go take a look as some of them!
In the afternoon, both 86 and 87 received their reports. Students had to write some reflections on the last page... hopefully students will show them to their parents or guardians. Interview slots are filling up fast!

Vendredi, ciel bleu pour le moment!
This morning, students worked hard at their "Dans l'avion" French folders!
Monsieur Wanie decided that it's been a tough few weeks for students. Both classes would have had the opportunity to watch "Flushed Away" (or "Souris City" as it's ironically known in French)! But the old computer is fried... aargh! Someone get Monsieur Wanie a Mac, these PCs are junk!
Anyway, students kept up the work on the French folders and Monsieur Wanie took up the answers from the previous assignment.
Students also worked on the "Chapitre 8 Geo" questions due on Monday.
On another note, Interview Request Forms went home yesterday. That's ahead of the reports that go home on Monday. It was requested that for the first term interviews, students who received 60% or under in any subject, parents come in and discuss with the appropriate teacher, the next steps to take.

Jeudi gris et brumeux!
Sooo, this morning students gave their opinions of the art installation... everyone seemed to agree that it would look better hanging from the ceiling... we'll have to see what we can do about that.
Students then had an opportunity to work on their "Geographie Chapitre 8". Several students worked diligently on the collage part of the assignment, cutting up newspapers and magazines...
Many students were also working on their "Dans l'avion" folder...
Oh, and 87 wanted more pictures of themselves on the blog:

Mercredi gris!
So today, there were quite a few students in early to work on their 3D assignment...
During two of the morning periods, students and Monsieur Wanie had a couple good class discussions on the "Chapitre 8 Geo".
In the remaining four periods of the day, students worked dilligently on the art assignment. As Patrick put it: it really looks awesome! Monsieur Wanie is looking forward to getting it on the wall!

Mardi gris et pluvieux.
Monsieur Wanie's back! Yay!
So, getting past that excitement, students dove right in to finishing the 3D art assignment. Most students have folled the directions very well, and the project as a whole looks great. Hopefully it will all come together by the end of the week!
Students had a presentation from Oakwood regarding the French program there. It was pretty cool to see some students from Monsieur Wanie's class last year! Ideally, the presentation will have given students ideas of what next year may be like and the opportunities there will be in high school.

So, hopefully all students did the classwork assigned by Ms A. who was in for Monsieur Wanie.
There were two periods of time for students to work on their 3D buildings in full size.
Then students had "Geo" to work on and finally the new French folder: "Dans l'avion".

Jeudi pluvieux.
Today was a busy one!
Monsieur Wanie took two periods to discuss the latest "Geo" chapter and questions with 86 and 87. This chapter deals with world patterns of rich and poor. Most of the questions will take more time do think about than to complete. Classes will have more discussions about the chapter next week.
87 then had a chance to get started on the latest French Folder "A bord de l'avion". 86 will have their chance to get on it tomorrow with Ms A. Monsieur Wanie will be out of the "office" on Friday and Monday... Students had better be attentive to their duties, all assignments are posted to the side-board.

Mercredi, mi-semaine en soleil!
This morning, students in 86 and 87 started art work to refurbish the "New York" scene at the back of the classroom. It's an involved process. Students need to draw a scale drawing using the proper ratio, followed by a fractional net drawing... fun huh? Well, it will look great in the end!
In the afternoon, students continued on their net drawings and building plans. Some students took some time to get ahead or catch up in "Geo".

Mardi, le froid et le soleil!
Congratulations Nick and Geoff! They gave the correct answers to yesterday's picture question... It was Charles de Gaulle Ariport in Paris! Hope you liked your Sesame Snaps!
In other news... There were quite a few Students in early this morning asking for extensions on "Geographie Chapitre 7".
Students from both 86 and 87 attended a Skills Canada presentation about career choices and opportunities this morning.
In the afternoon, students had a "first crack" at "Geographie Chapitre 8". Here are the details on that:
"Geo Chapitre 8"
P146-165

This morning, students worked to finish off the "A l'aeroport" French folder. It's taken a little longer than Monsieur Wanie would have wanted to get to it! Anyway, students in 86 and 87 worked for two periods each and then had a period to discuss questions 1 to 4. A pretty straight forward day!
Where is this? The first person to figure it out and come and tell Monsieur Wanie gets a package of Sesame Snaps.

Vendredi, de l'encouragement.
For students, today is a day off school... In the meantime, Monsieur Wanie is working hard at getting his Term 1 reports together. Looking over all the grades, it's clear to see that this year's students are very hard workers. There will be quite a few great reports!
Students, just a quick note of encouragement: The "Geographie" textbooks are tough. The amount of effort required to complete the assignments and the readings is enormous, Monsieur Wanie is fully aware of that fact. That many of you try so hard and get such good grades is awesome.
The Term 2 chapters are not quite as difficult but a great deal of effort will still be required in order to do well! It is important to stay focussed and not get discouraged!
Keep up the good work! :)

Jeudi, il fait beau mais il fait froid!
This morning, students worked at finishing up their 3D shapes, their "A l'aeroport" folders and work on their short stories...
Later in the day, Monsieur Wanie went over the "Geographie Chapitre 7" questions with the class and continued yesterday's discussion on the four economic systems...
A reminder to students: You need to read the blog every day! You're on the internet anyway! Spend a minute to find out what you need to do, what you've forgotten or due dates that you've missed!

Remembrance Day
Great work on the wreaths!
This morning, most students in 86 and 87 were involved in the Remembrance Day assembly... It was easily the most moving assembly Winona has seen. The choir, the tour band (with Emmett!), and the strings group performed; Monsieur Wozniak spoke of his family and personal experiences and Monsieur Tancredi gave a few words. Lest we forget...
In the afternoon, students worked on a directed reading activity in "Geographie" followed by a class discussion on the reading... about the four economic systems.
NOTE: 86 and 87, you are great kids! You have been awarded an extension on your short stories... they are due on Monday. Monsieur Wanie appreciates that you have lots of deadlines lately... do great things over the weekend and let there be a big pile of assignments on Monsieur Wanie's desk on Monday!

Mardi! Encore une belle journee!
So, today students worked on their "À l'aéroport" folders. A few students have completed them and included the answers in their notebooks.
Students worked at gluing their 3D shapes together in art...
In the afternoon, Monsieur Wanie did a rather lengthy, detailed review of "Géographie, Chapitre 6". Students participated well in the discussion. Monsieur Wanie also gave a heads-up of question #2 in "Géographie, Chapitre 7".
Reports are coming up soon students! Get your missing units in! Come in for extra help if you know you need it!

C'est vendredi! La moto ne demarre pas!
This morning, students worked on the new French assignment, the one where students need to write a story about an avalanche or a forest adventure incorporating friends, family or acquaintances as characters in the story...
Students also worked on "Geographie, Chapitre 6". Most of the questions take some brainstorming. Make sure your answers reflect that you've used your head to compose your answers!
86 and 87 also worked on their "A l'aeroport" folders and 3D art assignments.
It was a pretty busy day! Students, remember that "Geographie Chapitre 6" is due on Monday! Come in early if you need extra help!
Hopefully, students will find some time to get outside on Sunday, it's supposed to be great weather! Play safely!

Jeudi, la pluie!
Today Monsieur Wanie is back from the dentist chair...
It seems most students were on task yesterday, working on the "A l'aeroport" folders, "Geo" keywords and art assignments...
Today, some students were on desk-washing duty. There's nothing like a fresh canvas!
Students worked on their "Geographie Chapitre 6" and the new French writing assignment based on "L'avalanche" or "Aventure en foret".
In the afternoon, students finished yesterday's art assignment... and started on the design/build part of the 3D shapes unit.

Lundi, le soleil brille mais il fait froid!
This morning, Monsieur Wanie went over the "Geographie, Chapitre 6" questions with 86 and 87. Students had a few minutes at the end of the period to work on the keywords...
And in the afternoon, students had lots of marked assignments handed back. Most students are doing really well!
Students, keep in mind the fact that Monsieur Wanie is marking ever more critically so be sure to fully read the chapters so as to incorporate what you've read into your assignments as well as some of your own ideas and/or original thoughts. Note also that Monsieur Wanie is available every morning for extra help, know when to come in for a hand on your assignments, to ask for an extension or because it's freezing outside and you forgot your hat on the kitchen table!

87 meanwhile, worked on their "Geographie Chapitre 5" and their Graffiti assignments, both of which are due tomorrow!
All in all a pretty good workday!

Mardi, le calme avant la pluie?
First thing this morning, Monsieur Wanie gave a lecture on some of the important parts of "Geographie Chapitre 5". Students who were focused, took notes to help in answereing the questions. Students Note: You must read the chapter carefully to complete the questions! Do not forget to add original ideas to your assignment answers, that's where the extra points are!
Classes 86 and 87 also worked on their graffiti projects. Some of them are looking great so far! Here are some cool bits!

Lundi, une semaine normale?
So, today is looking like the beginning to a regular week. Some students were in early this morning to work on assignments and get ahead of things...
In class, both 86 and 87 worked on their graffiti drawings in large scale. There are some great ideas being brought out on this project! Good work so far students!
Students were working on "Geo Chapitre 5" today too! Most students are really benefiting from the extra time with the textbooks. Some students have taken extensive notes on the chapters and are doing very well this term! Reports are not far away!

Mardi...
So, Monsieur Wanie is back! It seems as if most students from 86 and 87 acted responsibly for Ms Anastassiadis yesterday... only three students will be talked-to regarding "conduct unbecoming a grade 8". Students worked on their character sketch, "Geo Chapitre 4" and reading novels.
Today, students had a one further period to read their novels before the next assignment. And both classes had the opportunity to get started on the new graffiti art project.
Notez Bien! Your "Geo Chapitre 4" and character sketch are BOTH due tomorrow!

Vendredi, le soleil brille mais il fait froid!
This morning, Monsieur Wanie gave his lecture on "Geographic Information Systems". Students had an opportunity to answer question #3 of their "Geographie" assignment. It relates to why there is such growth in the sector of "infosystems" in today's economy.
Students also handed-in their 3D unit-ending Art assignments.
In the afternoon, students had an opportunity to work on their "Geo Chapitre 4" and ask Monsieur Wanie individually for clarification on the questions... Students started on the poster for question #4 that ask about jobs created by the fact that the tendency is for people to want to spend more time outdoors...

Jeudi, gris ce matin!
This morning was a busy one!
Monsieur Wanie held two class discussions, one on the keywords of "Chapitre 4: Les gens au travail" and the other on the questions of the chapter due next Wednesday.
There will be an additional discussion tomorrow on "Geographic Information Systems" or SIG in French. Students, there is a case study on pages 82 and 83 to read!

Mercredi, le givre!
This morning, students in 86 and 87 worked on their character sketches. Some students completed their sentences and had Monsieur Wanie correct them, then started on the background drawing for the good copy... Unfortunately 86 misplaced one of the books and just missed having to come in on the lunch hour to find it! AArgh! Students, what's with the book trouble this year! Luckily, one student found the missing book and turned it in!
In the afternoon, students worked on their 3D drawings and their "Geographie" keywords... all the while listening to Ms Nahas be crabby with students next door.

Vendredi sous la pluie!
So, a rainy Friday!
Students were deep into the last parts of the "Geo" assignment this morning. 86 and 87, it's due on the 13th of October so your last opportunity to work on it at school is in the morning before school on Tuesday!
There was also an opportunity today for 86 to get started on the French novel character sketch using "L'avalanche" and "Aventure en foret".
Both classes began the good copy of the unit ending 3D art drawing assignment. It's due on Friday the 16th!
Have a great Thanksgiving weekend everyone!

Jeudi, le soleil brille mais if fait frais!
This morning, several students came in early to get extra help or work with the "Geo" texts. Good to see which students are making a serious effort to get their assignments done before the due-date!
During the day, both 86 and 87 worked in groups of 3 or 4 with their French novels to get a deeper understanding of the novel. 87 then worked independently to write an outline for a character sketch followed by a full sentence draft and a draft picture to accompany the assignment. 86 will have an opportunity to catch up to 87 tomorrow...

Mercredi, j'ai pris la voiture!
First thing this morning, 87 had an extra period with Ms Gesner to work on CASI.
86 and 87 both had their "Geo Chapitre 2" handed back. Three students did exceptionally well, having handed-in assignments that demonstrated an above grade level understanding of the concepts... Good job kids!
Students continued to work on the "Etude de cas, Montreal", most students should have had sufficient time to complete the 5 questions assigned. Students also had some extra time with either "L'avalanche" or "Aventure en foret" in preparation for some related group work and subsequent class discussion and quiz.

Mardi gris...
This morning, Monsieur Wanie was on students' case about putting their names on their assignments, handing things in on time, being still and attentive for the anthem and the announcements, and bringing the textbooks back, there are 47 now... up from 44 but still below the 54 the class started the year with.
Students started work on the Montreal case study in "Geo, chapitre 2", it's not part of the assignment due on the 13th of October, but it will give students a deeper understanding of the concepts of site, situation, and land use.
In the afternoon, students in 86 and 87 began reading one or the other of two short French novels: "Aventure en foret" and "L'avalanche". Students will be answering questions based on their reading...

Lundi, une nouvelle semaine!
This morning was an exciting one for students. The QSP magazine fund-raiser starts today, most students seemed pumped about all the prizes and the potential to raise big money for the school!
The "Across the ages Geo drawing" was due today, most students handed the assignment in. Monsieur Wanie reminded students that the chapter questions are due on Tuesday, 13th October.
As well, Monsieur Wanie explained the unit ending assignment in 3D art drawing. The due-date has not been fixed yet... Students are required to use the perspective ideas and concepts taught in class on their final. It is mandatory to have both a rough draft and a good copy of this final assignment as well as handing in the entire package of drawings worked on in class for full marks to be awarded.

Vendredi, c'est presque le "weekend"!
Finally Friday! Students and teachers seem to be a little tired lately, maybe it's the lack of sunlight this week!
Anyway, Monsieur Wanie spent yesterday evening and this morning combing the world for more "Geo" textbooks! They are very expensive and hard to find. He has an email written to a used textbook retailer, so there's a chance there will be some for next week! Yay!
Today, both 86 and 87 worked diligently on their "Geo" chapter. Monsieur Wanie went back and added detail to the discussion on the chapter to clarify even further the themes and questions within.
Students, do not forget that the "through the ages" assignment is due on Monday!

Jeudi, demain c'est vendredi!
This morning, students read about "emplacement et position" in their "Geo" textbooks and worked on their comprehension of questions 10 and 13... Monsieur Wanie provided some clarification on these, considerably more difficult, last questions.
Students have not been allowed to sign out textbooks for the last few days given that ten of them have disappeared. Upon their return, Monsieur Wanie will once again allow students to take them home. To make up for this unfortunate situation, several students have taken advantage of the fact that Monsieur Wanie provides time before school for all students to come in and work or get extra help.

So, this morning, 86 had their discussion with Monsieur Wanie regarding the "Mots cles du Chapitre 3 en Geographie" (keywords) and were presented with their mid-chapter assignment as posted for 87 yesterday. Some students in 86 also had some extra time to work on their CASI assignment.
In the afternoon, Monsieur Wanie continued the "Geo" keywords with 86 and 87 and went over the chapter questions. 87 had some more time to work on the "three tiered drawing" under Monsieur Ferron's supervision last thing in the afternoon!

Mardi, une bizarre de journee!
Today, students in 86 and 87 spent some time discussing "Geo Chapitre 3" with Monsieur Wanie. He explained the mid-chapter assignment which is a "three tiered drawing over the ages". It's due on Monday, 5th October. Students were working well today, and seemed really focussed on turning out a decent project. Students could also view last year's assignments to get ideas as some were still posted in the outer hallway.
The weather was crazy out today, one minute it was raining, the next it was sunny!
In the afternoon, there was another fire drill, and 86 stayed an extra period with Mr. Shipinkas to do the CASI thing...

Lundi, gris et pluvieux...
What nasty weather it is this morning! And dark!
Anyway, Monsieur Wanie has collected the "Chapitre 2 Geo" assignments that were due, so there are two nice piles on his desk to be corrected.
Classes 86 and 87 are continuing with "Chapitre 3 Geo", the assignment and due-date are below.
Geo Chapitre 3
P46-65
Questions: 1-5, 10,13.

Vendredi, on court et on danse!
Well, today there wasn't much going on classroom-wise.
The school participated in the Terry Fox run at Winston Churchill Park. Monsieur Wanie and Monsieur Ferron took their classes the long way 'round. Some students may have noticed that Monsieur Wanie picked a route that took students by two of the four streams that city planners detoured into culverts in the early 1900s.
The afternoon was also one of fun for students at Winona, with the dance going on...
Hopefully all students will have a fun safe weekend and remember that "Geo Chapitre 2" is due on Monday!

Jeudi, ensoleille!
This morning, students worked diligently on the "Geo" chapter, some had questions for Monsieur Wanie, a good thing! Students, here's a bit of wisdom for you: Always ask questions... so you know now, what you didn't before.
The school had a "Hold and Secure" drill, not as exciting as it sounds... thankfully!
Students were given back their "Chapitre 1 Geo" assignments, most students did very well, Monsieur Wanie is proud of the work students have completed thus far.
A reminder to students who received a mark or note in red on the "Ratatouille" quiz or in their "Geo" stuff: You need to come in and talk to Monsieur Wanie about your score!
In the afternoon, students in 86 and 87 continued on their perspective drawing unit...
Not a really exciting day but sheesh, did it feel like everyone was hyped or what?!

C'est mercredi, la mi-semaine.
This morning, Monsieur Wanie handed back the Ratatouille quiz. Most people did very well, however he still went on a rant about the use of accents, reading the question properly, masculin and feminine nouns, his vs her concept in French...
Later in the morning, Monsieur Wanie worked with the class to come up with communal "Geo" chapter keyword definitions. In the afternoon, students continues with the keyword definitions and Monsieur Wanie outlined the chapter questions.

Mardi, la pluie ou non?
This morning, Monsieur Wanie came in to see a couple notes from the supply teacher on his desk. One was good news relating to 86 and one was very bad news relating to 87... so, Monsieur Wanie will be having a short lunch-time "meeting" with some students in 87...
Today, students were working on the key words from yesterday in "Geo, Chapitre 2" and the related chapter questions... Most students worked well yesterday, some are in hot water because they have nothing to show for two periods of class yesterday, so there is some catching up to do.
TTC Photo day was this afternoon, so students had the opportunity to get their student cards... hopefully no-one did what Monsieur Wanie did when he was in Grade 8: put his name down as "Ridy Culous"...
Anyway, students also had the opportunity to build on a previous art theme adding the concept of forced perspective to their cityscape drawing.

A bit of a windy day, n'est-ce pas?
Today, 86 finally had a chance to finish watching "Ratatouille". The answers to the assignment are due on Monday! Monsieur Wanie went over all the questions in "Geographie" that are to be handed-in on Tuesday, September 22nd.
Students in both 86 and 87 had some class time to work on the "Geographie" assignment, the format of which, Monsieur Wanie outlined to 86 this morning and to 87 yesterday.

Le soleil brille ce jeudi!
Today, students had a fire drill. Everyone in 87 did a great job of getting outside quietly and lining up by the power pole for attendance.
Both 86 and 87 had a chance to watch the rest of Ratatouille and finish up on the questions.
The due-date for the "Geographie" chapter 1 is Tuesday the 22 of September. Students must remember to type or neatly write their answers and present the assignment in a folder whilst incorporating something that makes it stand out, a picture, a map or something else original to make it "pop"!
Students should be checking the blog on a daily basis!

Mercredi, un peu frais ce matin.
This morning, Monsieur Wanie was having some technical issues with the old computer, but as soon as the DVD player and sound issues were cleared up...
Classes 86 and 87 had the opportunity to watch "Ratatouille" in French. It's a great animated movie about a rat who becomes a chef in Paris... Of course, there's no simple movie-watching going on at school! As such, students were given a list of 25 questions to answer in full French sentences in the notebooks.
Ms Ellen (aka Marcy) came in today to talk to 86 about her function as guidance counselor at Winona.

Ms Ellen (aka Marcy) came in today to talk to 86 about her function as guidance counselor at Winona.

Mardi, bleu ciel!
Monsieur Wanie informed students of a little change in plans regarding the "Geo" texts... students will leave them in class and can sign them out at will. This will accomplish a few goals: Firstly, students will not have to tote around the weighty tomes; Secondly, students will still have open access to the texts; Thirdly, there will always be enough texts to go around.
This morning, students started work on the "Geo" chapter. It encourages students to think about population density and distribution, where people live and why and economic development.
Ms. Ellen (Marcy) came in to talk to grade 8s in 87 about her function as guidance counselor. Students had a short survey to fill out. Tomorrow, it's 86's turn.
Neat lowrider!

Lundi, la premiere semaine complete!
This is the first full week of the school year!
It was a pretty busy day, with class photos making it a bit chaotic.
Anyway, classes 86 and 87 started on a perspective drawing art assignment.
Students were also given "Geographie" textbooks, with the first chapter's questions:
Chapitre 1 Geo
P4-21
Questions:
7,8,9,10,14,15,16,18
Due______
Students, keep in mind that Monsieur Wanie is available for extra help EVERY DAY from 8:15 to the bell. (Congrats to the few students who have already come in early to work!)And you thought the class "Geographie" texts were old!

Vendredi, la fin de la premiere semaine!
Due today: Canada maps and "French Rectangle Assignments"
This morning both 86 and 87 worked on their "Il fait quoi ton papa?" questions. Students put their answers on the white-board and all was corrected for transcription into the notebooks.
In the afternoon, all students had a chance to do some reading aloud.
Students: Play safely on the weekend! Traffic still isn't used to everyone being back in the city from summer vacation!

Jeudi, presque vendredi.
This morning, Mr da Luz came in to give a little talk regarding school rules, decorum, expectations and some specifics of the on-line code of conduct.
Later in the day, students in 86 and 87 began a French reading assignment based on the short story "Il fait quoi ton papa?". Questions were copied into notebooks in preparation for tomorrow's class.
Students need to remember that the Canada maps and "Rectangle" assignment are due tomorrow, that's Friday!
Forms and money too, last day to hand stuff in is Friday!

Mercredi, il fait chaud!
Second day of school!
Students have started to bring in the money for the activity fee, agendas, locks, Monsieur Wanie's lunch... (just kidding about that last one!). 86 had a chance to find a locker and both classes have made an effort to bring in all the crazy paperwork the office requires.
Regarding assignments, students continued to work on their French rectangle assignment and their Canada maps. Some students are doing a great job of using some colour and adding in lots of detail!
Tomorrow students will have their first go at "Lecture en Francais", they will be reading a short story called "Il fait quoi ton papa?".

C'est la premiere journee de l'annee 2009/2010!
Wow, the summer by went quickly!
So it's a new school year...
Today, Monsieur Wanie's new 86 and 87 classes were given a few classroom rules. Lots of paperwork was handed out, mostly forms that need Parent or Guardian signatures. Students were handed their agendas and "Francais" notebooks. Those who had their locks were able to choose lockers. Monsieur Wanie is looking forward to getting all the "monies" for activity fees, agendas and gym shirts taken care of so the real fun stuff of learning can begin!
Students in 87 got a head-start today with work on a small French assignment as well as a "Geographie" map of Canada's provinces and territories.
Students, hopefully you are ready for a great grade 8 experience! Work hard, play hard, stay safe and have a great year!
Monsieur Wanie

Awards and graduation!
Dear Students:
It looks like everyone in 86 and 87 will be going on to high school... so this will be the last post for the year!
Monsieur Wanie just wanted to say... (and I'll write in the first person) that I am extremely proud of each and every one of you. Sometimes it took talking softly, sometimes I may have raised my tone or "been in your spokes", but at every point during the year, my goals were to provide a safe learning environment and a good grade 8 experience for you all... hopefully I was at least moderately successful!
You were easily the best two classes I have ever had the pleasure of teaching, and for that I owe you my thanks. It was an honour to be your homeroom teacher this year. I will miss you.
Okay, back to gruff Monsieur Wanie barking orders: Students, have a fantastic summer! Stay out of trouble but play hard! Then, simmer down and have a great time at high school... And come back in the fall to say hey!
L8er,
Your Wanie

C'est vendredi...
So, it's Friday of the last full week of school!
A few presentations, some putting up of posters in the classroom, a bit of cleaning, but a really uneventful day really!
Several students still have not brought in permission forms for Tuesday after the rehearsal!

Jeudi, et il pleut encore!
Today, several groups presented their projects before the bell. Some very nicely done work!
Several groups presented during class, thanks for the Gobstoppers!
Students are reminded to bring boat-cruise forms for Monday and post-rehearsal permission forms for Tuesday.
As well, students are reminded to bring overdue library books to Ms Banman or their Yearbooks will be withheld.

Mercredi... la pluie.
Today, students in 86 and 87 worked to finish their French term essays...
A few groups presented their projects: either the "Pays Francophone" or "Industrie Canadienne", some students have chosen to present before the bell in the morning...
Both classes did a locker clean-out today as well, in particular to find missing "Geo" and "Histoire" textbooks... Whatever Paul found sure was stinky!!! Students, keep in mind that if your lock is still on your locker by Friday evening, it will be cut off and your stuff will be transferred to the lost-and-found bin.

Lundi, la derniere semaine!
Weeeee're Baaaack!
Monsieur Wanie had a great time up at Camp Arowhon, it was observed that most students did too! A few bug bites and some good times for all!
So, there is one intense week of school left! Today, students in 87 are presenting their "Pays Francophone" projects! The first three groups presented a great introduction to La Martinique, Le Mali, La Belgique!
Students in 86 decided against presenting their projects today and instead chose to complete a subject-verb written assignment... hmm. An interesting choice given that the presentations were due TODAY!!!
Random Chuck Norris on the Winona roof.

C'est vendredi aujourd'hui!
So it's the Friday just before Arowhon! Whoo Hoo!
Students handed in art assignments last week, here are a few cool examples! Monsieur Wanie is looking to get them put up around the classroom over the last week of school...
Important Notes:
1. Monsieur Wanie will be taking a Blog-Break over next week... the main purpose of going to Arowhon is to unplug and get back to nature, so that's exactly what his intention is!
2. In the weeks following the Arowhon trip, Monsieur Wanie will be available early in the mornings by appointment only!

Jeudi, le soleil brille encore!
So it looks like another sunny day outside, who can help looking out the class windows!
Classes 86 and 87 still feel empty given the students missing to Music Camp. Today they are missing out on the very last of the "Les Voyages de Gulliver" worksheets... this one, a 50 question "Vrai ou Faux" assignment that had to be completed individually... (Something a few students failed to comprehend!)
Wednesday, June 3, 2009
Mercredi, et encore des presentations!
Today, more presentations! Good stuff Anna and Sheridan! Bien fait Tracey aussi! Monday the 15th June is the due-date for the "Pays Francophone" presentations, the week after next but most students are away next week... so this weekend is the last chance to get work done!
Arowhon is just around the corner, another reminder to bring bug spray (a pump is better than an aerosol), sunscreen (the higher SPF, the better), a hat and a sweater! It will be cold at night! (It was 4C yesterday!)

Mardi! Il fait beau!
This morning, students who are participating in the Arowhon trip, were given a clothing and FAQ sheet to take home. Hopefully, sunscreen, bug repellent, and a rain jacket will be remembered and not forgotten at home!
Students in 86 and 87 continued presenting their Canadian Industry projects... congrats to Caren and Claudia for a particularly well done presentation!

Lundi, gris!
This morning, there were several students in early to hand in assignments and to ask for extensions on their presentations...
There are quite a few students away at music camp this week too...
Oh, and then there's the Winona Biathlon, so that takes a few more students out of the mix...
So, there were only a few presentations, of which all were well done and fun! Students, good job so far!
Hopefully tomorrow we'll be seeing more fun presentations!
Of note: The Arowhon trip is next week. Students and parents should expect a limited clothing list to go home tomorrow so everyone is aware of what to pack!

Vendredi, gris.
Yay, Monsieur Wanie's back!
And students were thrilled to hear that he brought with him ANOTHER "Les Voyages de Gulliver" worksheet. Most are probably wondering when it will ever end! Well not today!
Monday is the due-date for the "Projet/Presentation d'Industrie Canadienne" so hopefully students will be working over the weekend to practice and perfect their presentations!

Jeudi, ou est Monsieur Wanie?
So, Monsieur Wanie wasn't at work today. Instead, Madame Quinn was in... Most students were able to complete "Test Numero Trois" of "Les Voyages de Gulliver". Tomorrow, all students will get another quiz on "Gulliver" and will have some time to work on the "Projet/Presentation d'Industrie Canadienne"... It was nice to hear that most students were getting the work done, with special mention of Caren, Vivian, Claudia, Juel, Tracey, Trevana, Noah and James!

Mercredi, la pluie en mi-semaine...
This morning was the due-date for the Projet d'Art! While a few students did not complete the assignment, those that did arrive to class were very, very well executed! It's obvious that students put a lot of time and effort into them!
Hopefully, students are getting the idea that it's "crunch-time" of the year! Monsieur Wanie is "on students' cases" if classroom protocol is not followed and "in their faces" if due dates are not abided-by! He's not being mean, he's just enforcing the fact that there's precious little time left in the year for students to demonstrate fully all the abilities that they have honed this year! It is Monsieur Wanie's secondary goal that all students be successful individuals! (The primary goal being students safety and well-being, obviously!)
The year-end is near! Students MUST keep working right up until the last day!
And that includes tomorrow, when Monsieur Wanie will not be at work. The third "Les Voyages de Gulliver" will be assigned and taken up on Friday! As students are aware, Monsieur Wanie has spies watching, so students should be sure to be working well for the supply teacher! (Whether it's Madame Norma or not!)

Mardi, un peu de vent!
Today, students in 86 and 87 were given their new French reading books... continuing with the theme of the classics in comics, the latest one is "Les Voyages de Guliver".
Students also had an opportunity to work on and hand-in the first chapter questions. People should be in early if they are not finished!
The Projet d'Art is due tomorrow. Hopfully all students are on top of things with respect to that1 It's a giant part of the term mark in art!

C'est lundi, le mois de la bicyclette!
So it's a sunny Monday, May the 25th. And it's bike month! Hopefully students are making an effort to ride to school!
Today, students in 86 and 87 had their first period to work on their Francophone Country Presentation. Most students' projects are coming along decently! Although there are some students who didn't bring their material to class or gave the responsibility to someone who was absent... Major project points were awarded to those individuals who were working well today!

Vendredi, un peu de brouillard!
Today was 86 and 87's first opportunity to work on the Canadian Industry project in class. Most students are progressing well. A reminder to students that a visit to the Toronto Archives might help in finding more information... Here's the Hewetson Shoe Company in Brampton, Ontario circa 1920... Part of Noah's family heritage. Cool huh? The building still stands and has been declared a heritage building recently. More cool!
